What's at stake for over 2/3rds of my fellow Missourians that makes them want to do this?

Julian ElsonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6669068.post-1098196763570226072004-10-19T09:39:00.000-05:002004-10-19T09:39:00.000-05:00How can 60% of a whole state be so cruel and so do...How can 60% of a whole state be so cruel and so dogmatic? I live in Missouri, where an amendment declaring "Marriage is between a man and a woman" passed with something like 70% of the vote. This goes beyond that: they have this abstract principle of marriage that they want to defend, and they're willing to put huge legal burdens on something like 4% of their fellow citizens for the sake of some abstract principle. Why? It isn't as if 60% of a whole state can be raging sadists, can they? They can't be dogmatic linguistic prescriptivists who insist that defending a word is worth more than the freedom and happiness of their fellow citizens, can they? What do they want? Who do they think they're benefitting? What morals do they think they're following? I can understand people like Johnston, who are just cruel bigots, which are bound to be a few people anywhere, but 60% of people are not Johnstons. I'm not claiming that a majority of "ordinary folk" must be saints or anything, but I can't imagine why the majority of "ordinary folk" would be wantonly cruel either.

Julian ElsonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6669068.post-1098158939560029932004-10-18T23:08:00.000-05:002004-10-18T23:08:00.000-05:00And my mother wonders why I never go to Mass anymo...And my mother wonders why I never go to Mass anymore. ::rolls her eyes::Andygrrlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02789345715660556627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6669068.post-1098148317845424152004-10-18T20:11:00.000-05:002004-10-18T20:11:00.000-05:00I need your help. In my local Democratic Party office, we receive a dozen or more calls a day from people who need new Kerry yard signs because theirs have been stolen, shredded, defecated on, and burned. I always encourage the people to file complaints with the police department.

Today when I arrived at the office, I learned that police actually caught two teenagers stealing signs. The police filed a report but no arrests were made.

I don't think that anything is going to come of this. I don't think the thieves will be charged with anything. The local government is full of Republicans.

Shouldn't every person be held accountable for their actions? Should Republicans get away with doing whatever they want with no fear of punishment? Are Republicans above the law?

I need your help.

Please write or call my local newspaper and demand that justice be done. Demand that these thefts be taken seriously. Demand that arrests be made and the thieves be prosecuted.

Flood them with letters, emails and calls. Spread the word.

Let them know that the whole country is watching!

Contact:

The Newark Advocate22 N. Allowing SSM is always a grave sin, but war is not. Tell that to the Iraqi boy who lost his parents, siblings, and three of four limbs in the early part of the war.

NancyPAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6669068.post-1098147608159691722004-10-18T20:00:00.000-05:002004-10-18T20:00:00.000-05:00mouse, if they listen to this crap and stick aroun...mouse, if they listen to this crap and stick around for more, they never were decent people. And they certainly weren't Christians of the sort that Jesus ("let who among you is without sin cast the first stone") would recognise.

Right now, Gay = Jew for some folks who are looking to update their kill 'em all portfolio. The good news is that "gay panic" defenses for murder are not successful very often. And that may deter some of the rychus, who don't fancy spending 20 to life in prison.

Mainstream conservative pastors don't advocate actual gay-bashing violence, although most may not want to speak out against it. But of course even the "responsible" pastors are hinting strongly on how to vote, on pain of Hell. Churches know how far they can go without jeopardizing their 501c3s. And it is pretty far - they would have to say, "In order to be a member in good standing, you must vote for Bush" AND have no qualifiers AND be small enought that the IRS won't be afraid to target you. The Catholic Church has in a few dioceses come pretty close to the first statement: If you vote for a pro-choice candidate, you are in mortal sin and must go to confession and repent. (News flash: Bush isn't actively calling for a ban on abortion required to save life of mother, he is merely denying that such a situation could occur. Therefore there is no candidate fulfilling Bishops Chaput's and Burke's requirements). But of course no-one is going to contest Catholic Church on tax exemption.

NancyPAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
