Fast food and vegetarianism

There is a really interesting discussion about how the criticisms of the fast food nation are quickly spiraling into mean-spirited fat-bashing and thinly disguised arguments that the working class are somehow morally inferior over at Alas, a Blog. I think it's a real shame, because I feel very strongly that fast food companies are wrecking havoc on this nation and something needs to be done about it. See, the thing I really liked about Fast Food Nation was that he made it very clear that he was not trying to moralize about eating the fast food but more trying to describe how the business of it was changing our nation from head to toe. I haven't read it for awhile, but I remember that he clearly stated that he liked to eat fast food himself, and then he proceeded to focus on labor issues, agricultural issues, and health issues that were more than, "Ohmidgod! There's fat people around!"-type critiques.

I'm glad that people are finally speaking out about the shallow-minded fast food critiques that are nothing more than fat-bashing and fear of the working class. But I do sometimes wonder if some critics of that war aren't engaging in the same ol' beat-on-the-intellectual-snob pseudo-populism that the conservative movement has perfected. I mean, obviously the ones shilling for the fast food industry have. But people who want to criticize the fast food nation AND the war on fat people have to be conscious, I think, not to guilt-trip people who choose vegetarianism or whatever for reasons outside of weight control.

I eat a little bit of fish (brain food), but I don't otherwise eat meat. I was never the biggest steak-lover to begin with, so it was pretty easy for me to give up eating meat altogether. (Except of course seafood. Yum.) After reading Fast Food Nation and especially after reading some of Jim Hightower's stuff on the agriculture business, especially this book, I realized that the way the agriculture business in this country is run is unconscionable. The poultry, pork, and beef industries are hands-down the worst--all three of them have fallen prey to the worst kind of corporate interests, who make no bones about buying off politicians and gleefully ruining the lives of the small farmers who used to dominate. Corporate ag has very little oversight because it's pretty much invisible to your average urban American. It's understandable--the ag wars are being fought out in the country whereas the visible corporate threat in the cities is mostly the retail and manufacturing industries.

Sitting down to a steak meal suddenly turned into an exercise in allowing those corporate farmers to get away with ruining the livelihoods of ranchers and polluting the countryside with cow shit. Nonetheless, I realize that's a slightly hysterical reaction, so I am not about to moralize to others who don't see it my way. And yes, now that I pretty much don't eat meat, I'd say I'm healthier--but I'm not thinner. It's not a Diet, just a diet. I know a lot of fat vegetarians and vegetarians who have diabetes from eating too many sweets and vegetarians with cholesterol problems. The diet can help some of those problems, but only if you are careful with the sweets and other ways of ingesting animal fats that contribute so much to cholesterol issues.

I get particularly irritable with PETA when they use sexual imagery to imply that vegetarianism=thinness=sexual attractiveness. Tricking people into thinking that eschewing meat is a fast track to have a supermodel's body is not going to make long-term vegetarians out of anyone, because as soon as the newly converted realize that they aren't really losing weight, they'll go back to their old habits. Hell, they may even go on the Atkins diet.

All this is to say that it's critical that the snotty moralizing about health and weight not let us get distracted from the real issues at stake in the fast food wars--that the quest for ever-cheaper meat has become an excuse to let Big Ag rip pollution controls to shreds and create monopolies for themselves. The people that are primarily hurt by this are in fact the working class people that are being disdained in the shallow fat critiques--rural people who live near factory farms and/or cannot get decent ag work because corporate farming has destroyed all decent ag jobs. (If you've read the part in Fast Food Nation about the meat-cutting lines, you know what I mean. Meat-cutting used to be and should be well-paid work.)

And it seems to me that the only way to get this into people's thick skulls that we are paying too high a price for "cheap" meat is to first make people understand that they don't need to eat meat morning, noon, and night. The rapid spread of vegetarianism has helped, but it doesn't have to be that extreme. If people could get their meat consumption down to 2-3 times a week, or even 5-7 times a week, it wouldn't cause panic to start passing regulations that might bring meat prices up. There's obviously a lot more groundwork that needs to be done before these industries will be put under stricter control, but I still think that the all meat all the time mindset is a national mental block. And yes, in my paranoid mind, I think that the whole Atkins diet getting revised and becoming a trend overnight was no accident. If an expose ever comes out that shows that the meat industries funneled money into propaganda for that diet, I will not be surprised one bit. It's just too much a coincidence that it became the "thing" right in the middle of a huge rise in the number of vegetarians.

  1. Great post. Can I just add an amen, as we say over here in Arkansas, to your words about the Atkins diet?

Also want to add, for anyone on that diet, that the Atkins bars/foods are a nutritional scam, according to my local nurse nutritionist -- the carbs are not correct, and the sugar alcohol, which the Atkins people say not to count, since it has no impact on blood sugar level, should indeed be counted, as it does indeed impact blood sugar level.

She says she's seeing many people coming in with Type II diabetes these days who have been on the Atkins diet, living on Atkins bars & such.

  2. Hey Amanda, I certainly agree about the evils of the food industry. I haven't read Fast Food Nation yet, but it's been on my list for a while now. (And yes, I despise Atkins and its disciples.)

I do have to say though, that as someone who has struggled with weight and been considered fat at various points in my life, that I really hate how the very good case against fast food often does turn into moralizing messages about fat folks. It's like the whole Saddam/9-11 conflation that the Bushies keep pushing. People see a fat person and automatically assume that you're a fast food junkie, and that if you'd just put down the large bag of fries, you'd be thin. I've known fat vegetarians and fat vegans who would no sooner down a big mac than slaughter a baby cow with their bare hands. I wish we could just take size out of the discussion altogether, and focus on the harmful health and environmental effects of the modern food industry.

I was a vegetarian (lacto-ovo) for several years, after reading "Diet For A Small Planet" back in the late 70's and learning that it takes 7 pounds of grain to make 1 lb. of animal protein. I do eat some animal protein these days as my body seems to do better with some, but mostly fish, dairy and poultry, with red meat maybe once a week at most.

We have no problem claiming that a sexually promiscuous and careless person is responsible for catching an STD, unfortunate though that may be. There are genes that have an influence on promiscuity and risk-taking as well.

There seems to be difficulty with saying "your condition is unfortunate, and I wish you didn't have it, but your actions (which themselves must be placed in the context of your other conditions) are also responsible for that condition" for people who have obesity-related (or just unhealthy diet/lifestyle, if they're thin and unhealthy owing to such factors), while it seems easier to say it with the aforementioned STD example, or with someone who's a reckless driver and has injurous crashes or gets lots of tickets. Smoking seems to be somewhere in between.

I'm not quite sure what the deal is, but maybe it's just that so many of us are overweight in our society (I'm sorta borderline-ish: I have a BMI of 24.8 or so, and my tummy isn't exactly flat.) that we're very sensitive, whereas the promiscuous are merely a (somewhat large) minority, rather than a slight majority. Or maybe it's the fact that all of us, from the thinnest to the fattest, eat to varying degrees, so saying that eating food makes you sick seems somehow intuitively wrong.

Avoiding offense here is no easy task. If "you're fat because you're a lazy and glutton" is offensive, "you're fat because you're a helpless lower-class victim of the institutions and structure of our society" is... well, I don't know which sounds more offensive.

Somehow, there needs to be a combination that says:
A:Our current institutions and social structures are disastrous to our health.
B:People are personally responsible for how they eat, and how often the work out.

    WITHOUT saying:
A:You're a helpless victim, without free-will, tossed about like a ping-pong ball by the omnipotent Lords of the Earth.
B:You're a bad, greedy, lazy person because you're fat.

This is no easy task. People are quick to read the implicit messages that they (rightly) perceive are often encoded in a common message.

    Julian Elson

  4. My point is that we can blow off all sorts of time and energy debating over exactly how responsible fat people are for being fat and whether that's bad or not and while we're doing that, massive corporations are gleefully buying their way out of government restrictions on their ability to poison our water and our air with cow and pig shit. Which can kill us all, regardless of how "responsible" we are. What's a more important responsibility to discuss--the responsibility of individuals to be svelte or the responsibility of our government to force corporations not to kill us all? The responsibility to maintain appearances or the responsibility to be conscious of how your behavior actually affects the world around you?

For what it's worth, the debates are smoking are completely different. Trying to convince people not to smoke because it's bad for them is a goal unto itself and not a distraction really from more important issues.

    Hi matey

I'm sure it was this blog I was reading a while back where someone was looking for an SEO tool for driving more traffic and get more hits for their website.

Anyway, I was speaking to a techi guy at work who gets to know all the latest stuff and he uses the free Link Referral Program.

His website on book on multi level marketing amongst other stuff has seen traffic explode since he started using the Link Referral Program - consequently his affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS his website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!

If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)
