The source of my insanity explained

Growing up, I thought all high schools in America had elaborate Homecoming rituals like Texas high schools. Apparently not. In the blog comments below this post, I was reminded of rituals for teenagers to show each other up in the "who's got the boyfriend with the biggest wallet?" contest, and no teenager ritual is worse than that of the Homecoming mum. Which, I find out from Google, is a Texas Thang.

Only Texans could take the humble corsage and turn it into a freak show.

Here is the standard corsage, from which the mum had its humble beginnings:

Corsage

This is what Homecoming mums initially looked like, a kicky, fun, rah-rah version of the corsage:

Mum1

You can see where this is going. In the pressure cooker enviroment of Texas high schools, one-upmanship with who could slap the most ribbons and shit on their mum spiralled quickly out of control. Also, since your boyfriend is the one who is to purchase your mum for you, this is training ground for the Diamond Olympics of adult womanhood. Yep, the bigger and more expensive your mum, the more lovable you are. There's a direct correlation.

My mum was roughly this big, though I didn't have anything as stupid as a teddy bear on it:

Mum2

This means I was medium lovable. I was okay with being medium lovable, because to be truly lovable, Homecoming Queen level lovable, you had to let everyone know by parading around wearing something like this:

Mum3

Yes, you tie it over your shoulders and behind your back.

If you think the adult pressures of Valentine's Day are difficult for single people to handle, imagine being the girl who had a small mum or no mum at all to wear to the Homecoming game.

  1. In South Carolina, a corsage like that would get you beaten, then shunned forever.

  2. I was in the California Central Valley. I don't remember any deal about corsages. I heard a lot about the limousines, and hotel rooms, and whatnot.

The woman I was secretly in love with was astonished that I didn't go to the prom. She explained that she'd gotten back together with her ex-boyfriend, whom she now hated, just to have a date to the prom. I loved hearing that.

  3. Wow, that's just plain surreal.

It reminds me of those horns that the Great Elk used to have. At least, that's my optimistic interpretation, because if it's true in a few more generations the corsages will be so big that the people competing won't even be able to walk to prom and the whole thing will be solved.

I discovered this Mum thing when I moved to Dallas, TX in 2003. It was definitely an educational experience. I grew up in Georgia (which is where I again live -- I only lasted 8 months in Texas!) and we had nothing of the sort.

I also learned about the Texas thing of pinning money to your shirt on your birthday. Interesting.

Money pinned on your shirt for birthdays? Drat, I've been ripped off my whole life.

In my hometown, you or your parents bought your own mum. That way, your family's financial status was on display. Well, either that or your own ability to hot glue stuff together.

My Grad corsage was an attractive, tasteful yellow rose.

I had freesisas, which are kind of a flower that one does not see much of on prom corsages, even in NY. But they came from the right guy (at the time) and I retain a fondness for them still.....

I grew up in NM, no such thing as mums. Moved to Texas and now I'm working at a flower shop making them. It's $40 for the very absolute basic mum and heaven help you if that's all you can afford. I can't say anything bad about them though. They've given me more than one hot glue blister and I'll be working till midnight the night before the game, but homecoming is a very lucrative holiday for us.

I can't believe there are people that are soooo hateful. What is wrong with kids in high school showing some school spirit? I wore a "one flower mum" to my homecoming game and didn't feel any competition as to who had the biggest mum. I am making my daughter (who has been nominated Homecoming Princess) a "two flower mum" and, again, no competition. We don't have the money to buy a mum so I am making it. It is not about the money but more to show one's individuality. It is just a fun tradition. Would you make fun of people who decorate a Christmas Tree? Don't chastize others traditions because I am sure you have a tradition that is strange to someone somewhere in the world.

Also, I have lived in TX my entire life (33 years) and I have never heard of pinning money on your shirt on your birthday. Just because there is something one person does doesn't mean the entire state does it.

    Where's the love?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous9/08/2005

I moved to Dallas from IL by way of CA. I must say, I was confused by the tradition at first. However, I quickly learned how to make them for my daughters and most of their friends - even though they all go with their boyfriends. I sent about 30 pictures to all my yankee friends and family members. I started making them because I was shocked at the prices in stores and did not think any guy should have to shell out that much money for a one shot deal. We do them together usually and have a great time coming up with inventive things to put on them. There is alot of competition in their school, but my girls and their friends tend to ignore that. Band has their own rules you know. :)

last year I built the biggest triple mum you have ever seen. Spent weeks planning, driving all over the dfw area (65 miles away)looking for just the right stuff to put on it and spent about 120.00. Since the girlfriend was up for homecoming queen, I knew it had to be the biggest and best I ever made and that all eyes would be on that mum. During half time my son broke up with her...... Now just in time for mums season again there back together. I don't know if she really likes him or just want another huge mum.

A friend just showed me this neat website full of halloween joke
I cant believe the quantity an quality of humerous halloween joke it contains
Heres one of the jokes i found on it:
Bob brought some friends home to his apartment one night after they had been out painting the town. One friend noticed a big brass gong in Bobs bedroom and asked about it."Thats not a gong" Bob replied "thats a talking clock. Watch this!"
Bob struck the gong and sure enough a voice on the other side of the wall screamed "Hey your jerk its 3 o'clock in the morning!"

Hello, I have a fairly new website that has been online for about 8 months. I looked at alot of websites that are in my area horse video game . I have done the internet MLM thing and really got disgusted at the whole thing. So my wife and I thought since we love horses we should build a website around that. We have done pretty good so far but I always want to improve. I didn;t realize it would be so time consuming though. But we love it and hope to improve and offer some of the best recourses and products available. Hence the search for content new products and information about what we have.

    Thank you for your BLOG.

I have a feeling most of the comments about these outrageous monstrosities are from Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas. I myself grew up in the "DFW area" and I can promise you the competition is fierce. It is beyond comprehension to expect a 15 to 18 year old boy to afford something like that or expect his parents to shell out money for something like that. I always had nice mums and I will understand why my daughter will think it is important when she starts high school, but I still think time could be better spent then showing off how much money you have or how popular you are by putting a bunch of crap on silk flowers and walking around with your chest puffed out like a bird on display.

Really great blog I've bookmarked it - now some really important bits of financial advice - as it is along the same lines I thought I would share this info with you.

We were paying far too much for items like kids clothes, games consoles, car insurance/home insurance/pet insurance, broadband, mobile phones and utilities/loans, credit card debt help etc. Then a friend of mine recommended a site called www.bargainplace.co.uk. We were able to get cheaper electricity, gas, mobile phone, broadband and loan deals at bargainplace. Thanks to my friend (and the site) I am saving something like £100 a month and can afford an extra holiday a year. Booked of course on www.bargainplace.co.uk. Thanks bargainplace ;-) !!

PS - I set up a website a couple of months ago and until recently I was getting no traffic at all. Then, I signed up to Linkreferral.com. Not only did I start getting visitors by the truck load, I also joined Affiliatewindow and am now making lots of money by partnering with companies like Argos, Next, John Lewis, Pixmania, Marks and Spencer, LX Direct, Littlewoods, Vodafone, phones4u, phones2u, Sky, NTL, Virgin Media, Talktalk, Woolworths, Empire Direct, ebay plus online gambling sites - you can make pot loads of cash.

Linkreferral.com is absolutelely free and has really helped my business take off.

PLUS!! there are opportunities to make money from Linkreferral as well - sign up for free and check out the website and email received for details

Follow these free tips and you won't go far wrong - that brand new BMW or Mercedes might just be around the corner!!

    Hi matey

I'm sure it was this blog I was reading a while back where someone was looking for an SEO tool for driving more traffic and get more hits for their website.

Anyway, I was speaking to a techi guy at work who gets to know all the latest stuff and he uses the free Link Referral Program at http://marketingexperts.wordpress.com.

His website on free home business amongst other stuff has seen traffic explode since he started using the Link Referral Program - consequently his affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS his website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!

If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)

Growing up in So. Cal our Homecoming was dance (ho hum) dance in the Girl's Gym
When I moved to TX and saw my SIL's mum hanging on her wall w/ all the ribbons, trinkets, etc. I asked her, "What is that ugly thing that is as big as your head?" Since I now live in Houston and my kids went to school here, I have become a "mum Mom" and have made a lot (15 personalized ones last year)of these! The bigger, noisier, gaudier, the BETTER!!! This year my daughter's will have lights, fiberoptics & we're figuring out the music part! Whew! Homecoming is next week - silly - since it's only the 2nd week of school - hey! I didn't pick it! They are actually quite fun to make if you're creatively inclined and the best thing to do it hit up the Christmas section AFTER christmas when most of the ribbon goes on sale - also use a lot of coupons throughout the yer @ JoAnn's Michael's & HObby Lobby..
