Teen idols and frenzied females

I saw a documentary this morning on Trio called "The Scream Heard 'round the World" about a phenemenon that amuses the hell out of me--teen idols and the hysteria they induce in their female fans. I've said before that I think that the frantic screaming and wailing that followed the Beatles and their ilk all the way up to N'Sync is just so much sexual repression finally finding an outlet. The whole thing reminds me of a watered-down Bacchanalia with Paul or Justin or whatever filling the role of Bacchus for these teenage girls, and that impression was strengthened hearing these teenage idols all grown up and reflecting on the past and the fear that if they let the hoardes of girls at them they would be ripped from limb to limb. I doubt anyone was in real danger of that happening, but there is a precedent of sorts, so I guess you never know.

The whole thing would be merely amusing to me if it was just a matter of a bunch of girls finding a socially sanctioned space to blow off a little sexual steam in a culture that denies that they even have such steamy feelings. But of course it's not. The interviews with Maurice Starr and Lou Pearlman, the managers of New Kids on the Block and N'Sync, destroyed any illusions one might have that this is an innocent phenemenon. Pearlman in particular seems hellbent on mining the childish fantasies of teenage girls and turning them into a formula he can feed back to them over and over again until he dies a fat, bloated millionaire. I'm afraid that the cyclical nature of these things has thwarted him for the time being, but I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to jump on the bandwagon again in the future.

The whole thing did cause me to wander off and think about the nature of these teenage fantasies. I can see why someone like Pearlman would see the whole thing in reductionist terms--the things that all teen idols from the Beatles until now have in common are pretty easy to figure out from a quick perusal. Get some young, pretty boys together and write them some song with over-the-top lyrics glorifying the charms of a female love object in such general terms than any girl can project herself into the role of the object, and there you go. A lifetime of crushing disappointment when you find out that no one is willing to compromise his/her pride that much on your behalf is all ready to go.

Is that why these young girls feel compelled to embarrass themselves by screaming and crying? Is it a sort of compensation, a way of telling the boy that is prostrate before them in their fantasy worlds that they return the feeling? The more I think about it, the likelier that seems to be the case. Boy bands really do fit into the chivalrous mode, with the songs about begging for affection a precursor to the ritual of proposal-engagement-wedding where a young man defers to his bride by asking her for marriage on one knee and in exchange he gets an elaborate ceremony where she is delivered to him by her father.

I think more than anything, the lack of ambition in the fantasy the teen idols provides is what saddens me. In the interviews with adult women who were swooning teenage girls once, they repeatedly said that they dreamed night and day that they would one day be Mrs. Paul McCartney, David Cassidy, whatever. There's a naked honesty in that fantasy, and it shows that girls are still absorbing the cultural message that a woman's value is measured only in relation to men.

These kinds of groupie girls are an embarrasment. Screaming, crying over, and even skipping school just to catch a glimpse of some pretty white boy is obnoxious and makes girls look like idiots who will do anything to be within a few hundred yards of some boy-band-boy who doesn't give half-a-shit about their (the girls') existence.

I'll admit I have a thing for Jon Stewart, Anderson Cooper, and Alfred Molina. But they're no Bacchus to me. No one worth embarrasing myself over. I would probably say something like "hey you're shorter in real life" or "dude what the hell are you doing in Indiana, you're wasting your time?"

But this neo-Bacchi culture is a perfect example of how some girls think that they need some guy to worship in order to "feel like real women". You need a guy in order to be a real woman. ::rolls eyes:: Whatever...

  3. But Pseudo-Adrienne, it has nothing to do with feeling like a "real woman." If you're 13 years old it'll be forever before you're going to feel grown up. The cool thing about being in love with David Cassidy when I was 13 was that I could meet all kinds of other girls who felt just like me, and our common passion for what we saw in him (and thus in ourselves) brought us closer together. It was like a public secret we all shared. Of course, in Cassidy's case a lot of fans would get their wish and be deflowered, he couldn't keep it in his pants according to his autobiography. I had my chance when I was about 23, but passed on it because I didn't want to ruin the perfect fantasy by having it meet up with reality. Turns out we have a few friends/acquaintances in common, and in a way he still makes my heart pitter-pat, but with me on my second (and final) marriage and him at least on his third I think we're both older and wiser. :)

So it's a sense of wanting to belong, Elayne? Other girls are screaming at the top of their lungs for some guy and at 13, a confusing and hellish age for just about everyone, so some girls feel compelled to do the same?

Well personally, me always somewhat being a counterculture type of girl just doesn't understand that.

Succumbing to groupthink at 13 is fairly common since a lot of people at that age desperately want to belong to some group. In this case, it might as well be with other gushing groupie girls.

Oh and I deleted the my other comment because it was a double post. The posting screen took forever and I was frustrated and trigger happy I guess.

And another thing, who is David Cassidy? It's obvious how young I am, isn't it?

David Cassidy was the guy for girls to get crushes on, back in the day when I was in junior high. As I recall, he was on TV in the show "The Partridge Family," about a family which was also a singing group; I watched the show for a little while because the person who played the oldest daughter had almost been my babysitter.

A movie that has an interesting take on the "crush on a star" phenomenon (in a more extreme form) is "House of Fools," a Russian movie about a mental hospital that gets caught up in the Chechen War. One patient's delusion is that she is engaged to Canadian singer Bryan Adams; at certain points, Bryan Adams will suddenly appear and stroll through the wartorn mental hospital, singing a love song and making romantic gestures to her.

  6. Hey-

I write about this quite a bit on the fan site within my site. It is absolutely Dionysian (the Roman equivalent of Bacchus) and I think it's a part of the collective unconscious. Some girls get it and some don't. If you do, it makes perfect "sense". Instead of running wild in the woods, having sex and tearing animals apart, modern Bacchantes pack stadiums and buy CDs and T-shirts. They always will, in some form or another, because I am convinced that this is a part of the collective unconscious.

Let me put it to you this way. Allen Ginsberg wrote about fucking pretty boys, and that makes him a genius. I do it, and it makes me a "groupie"? I don't think so. I think it makes me passionate, and creative and in love with the male form, just like any other artist.

    ReplyDelete
  7. PA, yeah, I think that the group thing has a lot to do with it. Worshipping the teen idol with your friends is as much about group solidarity as anything else. I think that most of the girls who get into this are using it as an outlet and most wouldn't actually go through with it if they did have a chance to be with their idol of choice. Like Elayne said, the fantasy is the thing.

The real groupies, adult women who hang around famous musicians offering up sex to get attention, make me bananas, too, Redneck. Most of the music I'm into doesn't attract these women at all, so when I do encounter this phenemenon, I'm always royally pissed. I'll never forget going backstage at one show only to find that it was crowded by a bunch of women pulling the typical groupie shit. Standing amongst a bunch of women all preening and hoping oh so deperately that they'd catch the band's attention as they left the stage made me ill and extremely glad that I wore jeans, boots, and a long-sleeved shirt, eliminating all possibility of being taken for one.

  9. Thanks for backing me up, Amanda. Definitely, the whole "special club" thing is appealing to an otherwise gawky teen who doesn't fit in with the others at her high school. "There are people out there who think like I do!" has been a primary motivating factor in my life, from David Cassidy fandom through my interests in sf, Firesign Theatre, zine publishing, even blogging. There's nothing embarrassing about it, I'm proud of the passion that Cassidy awakened in me as a teenager and how I was able to channel it to other endeavors throughout my life. And none of it had to do with me defining myself through a man - it was all about defining myself through my passions.

That said, it can certainly be taken too far. While I still get tingly when I see Cassidy on TV or something (particularly in interviews, he's quite perceptive and still very funny and self-effacing), my ardor for him waned as I let other hobbies into my life. Not so with many of my friends and acquaintances. I mean, I knew I was in trouble when I got kicked out of a couple Cassidy fan clubs when I was about 16 or 17 for pointing out that we were all "in love with" a manufactured image and not a real person ("Naked Lunchbox" indeed!), but that wasn't so bad as stuff like my best friend moving to Utah and becoming a Mormon because she was in love with Donny Osmond, or a penpal from Greece camping out every night (as an adult) during one of Cassidy's Broadway shows because she was so sure he'd notice her and love her immediately. Or, for that matter, in my opinion teen-idol crushes are nowhere near the level of grown women (and men?) who write real-person slash fiction. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you're interested in boy bands and how manufactured many of their songs are you need to listen to "Title of the Song" by Davinci's Notebook. It's a generic boyband song - of the "I suck take me back" variety. It's hysterical.

I've been looking for a drop ship and have located one at www.profitbig.com.

I would like to ask if you bloggers could take a moment and check this site out and let me know what you think. I've seen good reviews about drop ship but would like to get additional opinions about this before jumping in.

    Thanks
