Grant money went to this

Scientists are trying to prove the more you sleep around, the more likely you are to spread an STD. Of course, they dress it up in terms like "scale-free network" and "preferential attachment of new links between highly connected nodes".
It's sort of annoying, but their basic point is probably true enough--teach really promiscious people to use condoms, and the STD rate will go down. Hell, history demonstrates how quickly HIV spread through the U.S. by virtue of a surprisingly small number of really promiscious people, if I remember correctly. Had those people used condoms regularly, the spread of the disease would have probably been a lot slower. We don't really need a mathematical theory to show that.
But we are living in strange times, where religious fanatics have undermined everyone's abilities to think clearly about sexuality and disease transmission. If coughing up a complex, mathematical, obtusely worded document detailing what we already know, it might help get common sense back into government AIDS policy.
