Sex is like the rain

Kudos to the student who wrote this letter to The Daily Texan:

I am writing in response to those who think abstinence should be taught in schools as opposed to information regarding safe sex. No one will deny that the "safest sex is abstinence." Sure, and no one will deny that if it never rained, there would be no leaky roofs.

Teaching abstinence as opposed to safe sex is like discovering you have a leaky roof, and instead of covering the hole, you attempt to make it stop raining.

I love that metaphor, that sex is like the rain. It really is. Rain can be a horrible, damaging, destructive thing. It floods houses, washes away bridges, leaks through roofs.

But rain is absolutely necessary for life. On top of that, it's 90% pleasant. And most of the time, when it rains, your house doesn't wash away or even leak because you took a couple simple precautions.

Abstinence-only education is like telling someone if they must build a house, they might as well do it in the river, since it's going to wash away anyway.
