But this is "Dilbert" we're talking about, so there you go

Flea wrote Scott Adams a letter asking him to explain a recent comic to her to see if he is sexist or criticizing sexists. Sometimes things are pretty much what they seem, a lesson that I keep learning as much as I'd like to resist it. This is Adams' reply:

I'd have to say that none of you are too close. It's just a fact that women get a seratonin rush from shopping.

Effing wonderful. Of course, it caused that rush of Feminist Guilt in me, because I do get a kick out of shopping, but then I remembered that almost all my girl friends hate shopping and think I'm a relic. Then I went and shoved a guitar catalog under my boyfriend's nose and saw his eyes light up, a sure sign of seratonin rushing and remembered that ah yes, seratonin is not a hormone emitted from the ovaries at the sight of new shoes, but is in fact a hormone both men and women have that makes them happy. And getting something new that you like is something that pleases us both.

I have to wonder if Adams is thinking of any specific study. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a study where they measured women's seratonin levels after they spent an hour in shoe heaven and claimed that was all the proof they needed that women are natural shoppers. One way or another, I am really surprised at how hard you have to avoid thinking to see why Adams' little joke here doesn't make any sense. Martians like to have a new piece of clothing that they think will make them look sexier, even if they are more reluctant to admit it than Venusians are.

Humans are biosocial creatures. Stimulus triggers response, this much is easily demonstrated, and the complex chemistry that dictates mood is at least partially dictated by environmental factors, including our conceptions of gender. However, only a complete jackass would suggest that things like an affinity for shopping are hardwired into female anatomy. Scott Adams is clearly a jackass. You're absolutely right about this one, and I'd bet a favorite limb that any soft science he can offer to support his asinine claim is contradicted by the hard science of biochemistry. Keep up the good fight.

Adams does a lot of "I read it in a newspaper article and it sounded good" pseudo-science. It's not limited to notions about men and women.

I think that the existence of hobby stores, boat shows, Frys Electronics and Best Buy, not to mention the behavior of men in online games ("I need to get more gold to buy the Lambent Armor!") puts paid to the idea that only chickies love to shop.

The popular belief is that shopping is for women what pornography is for men--that is, they both relieve stress and create excitement. Generally speaking, women in our culture may have more of a proclivity to shop because women are generally more detail-oriented than men, and may find pleasure in what many men consider a dreaded task. However, I, too, know several women who consider shopping a dreaded task.

I am tempted to correct Scott's grammar, but that wouuld be off the subject.

I was about to come on here and say "I LOATHE shopping", but then again, get me in a bookstore, or CD store, and you won't see me for hours, lol! Don't get me wrong, I like new clothes too...I just find shopping for them to be an immense time-suck, so I do most of my shopping online or by catalog. Less time wasted. 'Thrill of the hunt' my culiddu, I want results.

So, it's not really "do women enjoy shopping, and do men hate it", but "what is 'shopping'?" Like with the guitar catalogs! I've sat around break tables full of men, moaning about how shopping is a drag, and they can't believe how much time their wives spend doing it---all the while with open catalogs of hunting/fishing/motorcycle/custom car or truck parts/guitars/stereos/etc. in front of them, salivating over all the stuff they want to buy. And they'll admit it too---they just won't call it "shopping". In their lexicon, "shopping" only refers to clothes, shoes, or household items. Even grocery shopping is its own special category; "oh, that's different."

Pfft, if anyone thinks men don't also enjoy shopping, they should have seen my boyfriend at Fry's last week.

Is it surprising that Adams is sexist? Cartoonists are social misfits who have a hard time relating to women. Otherwise they wouldn't be cartoonists (how's that for a generalization?).

As I posted on flea's blog, I think he was being sarcastic just because someone was taking his cartoon seriously. Everything about his strip is sarcastic or tongue in cheek.
Let's not blow this out of proportion like some wingnut who can't take a little blasphemy from time to time.

Thus the light but dry humor I wrote the post with. If Adams is actually trying to suggest that his jokes are meaningless, good for him. Frankly, I find weightless humor not to be funny.

Except videos of cats falling off stuff. That's always funny. Oh, and fart jokes.

Fart jokes are always funny. Real farts, not so funny.....like the one somebody let at the gym today; I about fell off the damn treadmill!! It was a real powerful SBD too---you could've asphyxiated yourself in that whole section of the building for about five minutes, gaahh!

I stand behind my previous comment, but I just saw the cartoon and it pissed me off. I had not clicked on the link before. So now I'M the fundie who can't take a little blasphemy from time to time!

I guess he could pass it off as a bad day without a good punchline about consumerism. Remember after 9/11, instead of pitching in together for a common good we were all supposed to run out and go shopping - for an SUV no less? They even created a post-9/11 tax break for SUVs. Instead of having a good punchline, he went for the typical male response of calling another man feminine. That's actually typical Wally - he already completely gave up trying to do his job and is making fun of Ashook for caring so much.

At LEAST he didn't say menstrating!

Wow! Today's strip is even more bizarre. It seems to head towards a criticism of sexism, then ends up as a gay stereotype. I'm starting to think Scott Adams is doing this deliberately.

The reason people like Scott Adams take the piss out of feminists is because their the kind of people who go OTT whenever anyone makes a small joke.
This kind of kneejerk reaction is only seen in religious nutcases and sports fans.
Get a sense of humour.

Hi. I just want to attempt to explain Scott Adams' Dilbert humor for the in-duh-viduals at this site that don't get it. First of all, the cartoon mentioned to be sexist was actually a comment AGAINST sexism. Employee II likened Employee I to a woman because he was A)not given full credit for his work, and B)brought out of his doldrums by shopping. Adams is illustrating the unfairness of the first reason as something that women probably experience more than men, and he is cushioning it with the second stereotype that women love to shop. Even if women love shopping no more than men, it is only an amusing nod to a harmless belief intended to make people - male and female - laugh. (I doubt very much that light-heartedly thinking of women as shoppers is going to do much to set the feminist movement back.) In the second strip mentioned here, portaying the gay man dating a rugby team only serves to nullify the boss's assumption that - gay or not - the man was going to have a family to support. That he was the farthest thing from a family man shows that, try as you may, you can't always succeed in 'rationalizing' discrimination against women. (And that this PARTICULAR gay man was promiscuous does not promote the belief that all gay men are sluts any more than the boss's belief that the man was going to have a partner and raise kids promotes the belief that all gay men are family-oriented.)

Thank you for letting me post, I have came by in search of information. I was told that blogs have some of the best and most relevent information for any given subject. Mine happens to be a diamond horse jewelry gift website that has anything from jewelry to horse tack. So I am looking for new products and information based on diamond horse jewelry to offer my customers and possibly some good marketing ideas for my website.
I won't steal your content but just looking for good ideas.

Websites that I have and all the work involved in keeping several of them going and updating blogs I am at best posting once a month.

I have enjoyed your blog and am thankfull to be able to sort of pick your brain without actually bothering you. Blogs tend to stand out because a lot of them people don't try and sale so much as to write about things that they enjoy or what they like to do.
Most of which comes out in there writing.

I want to grow and build my website to be the best and know I have much to learn, and fix to even come close.

I have been online for less then a year now so yes we are very young.

We have taken what we love and have turned it into a business.
I hope you come by to visit. I am not trying to sale you anything but would love to here if you have any ideas.

Thank you for your time.

Hi there blog owner! I am searching blogs to find information and sources to help with my website:http://www.horse-lover-gift-ideas-central.com/horse_home_decor.html My site is fairly new about 8 months old and have a google pr of 3 and get about 50 people a day to visit. My site has collectible home decor and is all affiliate merchandise.
I have been in MLM companys for the past 8 years offline mainly and have never made a dime. This is a new frontier for my wife and I and don't have very much experience but a friend suggested searching blogs to get ideas about how people sale and also what kind of information they offer their customers and clients. We are begining to make some good money selling collectible home decor related articles but I also want to offer my customers some quality information to go along with good deals. If you make it to my site and can offer some constructive critisizm I will take it into consideration or if you have some ideas it will be greatly appreciated. Remember we are on a budget and we do all the work ourselves. We have alot to offer in this general area collectible home decor and building. Thank you for your time.
