Kerry's speech last night

He played to his strength, which is his no-nonsense attitude.  I mean, of course he had the nonsense that politicians spout in their speeches, but surprisingly little of it.  After it ended, my boyfriend, who hadn't really had a chance to hear Kerry speak at length, like most of the country, said that he really appreciated not being spoken down to, not being bombarded with sentimental crap.  Kerry spoke to the audience like they were adults who would appreciate what he had to offer.  The little shout-out thing at the end didn't work--that's not Kerry's strength.
I love that he defended his wife.  Real men don't need sniveling cowards for wives to look like real men.  I love that he addressed their children as "ours"--that reflects the real family values in America today, a willingness to take on stepchildren as your own.  These are going to be things that the right wing attacks Kerry on--that his wife isn't mealy-mouthed, that their marriage, which is like more marriages nowadays than not, is weird somehow.  I hope people don't buy that crap.
He stayed on message about his service record. If anything is going to bring voters over, that will be it.  He didn't shy away from the xenophobic slurs that are thrown at him, instead reminding people that a President who can deal with foreign countries dipolomatically is a plus, not a minus.  I don't think there's that many who would truly disagree with that.  Overall, a great speech.

Did anyone else see the great takedown "The Daily Show" did on the racist media response to Al Sharpton's speech?  Hilarious.

The Daily Show last night was great. I especially loved the Kerry movie parody they did. It was one of their best features in years (probably since the Craig Kilborne era, which I preferred).

I'm not a Kerry fan but am voting for the ticket for Edwards, who should've been the candidate and would've been if the primaries hadn't been so front-loaded. Consider me an undecided who has decided on Edwards. I listened to the speech on the radio, and I did not appreciate Kerry's suggestion that you only go to war when you have to, that we will strike back when struck. I don't know why other voters are undecided, but for me the issue boiled down to the fact that I don't want to sit back and wait until we're attacked again. I think we should have a muscular role in the world. At the same time, I can see that Bush's attachment to tax cuts and increased spending is just foolish. I don't want someone who will strike back ferociously only after we've been hit, but I don't want to bankrupt our nation, either.

Darn, I missed The Daily Show.

But I must say this, Earnest, I've really not gathered that a Kerry Administration would wait until this country is "struck" in order to "strike back" (although should that happen, the striking back would be hard) but that a Kerry Administration would be far more likely to consider all the facts before jumping into something rather than only the ones that support the decision they've already made.

Considering all the facts is how Bush took us into Iraq and Clinton became eager to attack Iraq. Our Presidents used the best information they had, which, unfortunately, proved unreliable. I most certainly do Kerry would wait. He talked about striking back at anyone who attacked us (he used past tense), and he talked about fighting wars because you had to not because you wanted to. We never HAVE to help anyone in the world, but I would hope that we would want to. We never HAVE to keep countries from going nuclear, but I would hope that we would want to. And he's going to internationalize Iraq? Using countries who NEVER wanted to go, countries who must see what's going on in Sudan as a minor disturbance? I do not trust Kerry on national security based on last night's speech.

I respectfully disagree that anybody considered all the facts -- they all saw what they wanted to see. Particularly George W., who's urge to attack Iraq was not revealed first by Paul O'Neil or Richard Clarke but in his own words and actions not long after the inauguration. I'd have to go look them up to quote them, but my newsroom remembered all too clearly my warning at that time that we'd be at war in Iraq somewhere in the last two years of this term in office.

And the facts themselves were there for anybody to see, even as Colin Powell sat at the United Nations and gave the Security Council the hyped version. It's just that nobody seems to listen until you spend a few million dollars on a commission to dig out facts that are lying in plain sight.

As for trusting Kerry, well, I don't much trust anybody who WANTS to be president. And Kerry was not my candidate. But I'll trust a man who has been to war and who has led men into battle far more than just about anybody else. What has happened in this country in the last three years is utterly terrifying to me, and I'm not easily frightened.

And the one thing I really do like about Kerry is that he isn't threatened by Teresa, or afraid she's going to hurt him. I, too, like that he defends her, particularly from a right-wingnut like Scaife who spends beaucoups of bucks to trash anything left of him, which includes a heck of a lot of moderates.

I think Kerry will place the burden of proof on those who want us to kill and die. I think that many people have taken the opposite approach, for some reason, demanding that people give a reason for opposing the war.

I don't know if I like Kerry's approach to bringing troops home. I'd hold elections for a provisional government in Iraq (with the power to kick us out) and make it clear that if they want us there, we have conditions. (Equal rights for women and gays, for example. I wouldn't give my life for anything less.) If they genuinely would rather die than stop killing gays -- not that I think they'd make that decision -- then we leave. -- Omar Ravenhurst
