Making trouble

The funny thing about the reason that anti-birth control advocates have for protesting the morning-after pill, that teenage girls don't know enough to take it without a doctor's help, is that they have only their own sorry asses to blame if in fact teenage girls don't know what it is or how to take it. Kari Lydersen on Alternet confronts the fact that teenage girls may in fact be too stupid to handle the pill correctly.
Okay, I'm overstating her case for comical effect. In fact, teenage girls' ignorance of sexual matters is all the more reason to make the pill available. If they don't know enough to handle birth control before they have sex, maybe the morning after pill will help a few of them out. And what they don't know could fill several volumes the size of the O.E.D.

High school students I've talked to also have a lot of other bad information about contraception and STDs – that HIV and AIDS are two separate viruses, that married people can't get STDs, that herpes is a fatal disease.

Yeah, when I was in high school, it was believed that you got syphilis from animals, that you could douche with Mountain Dew as a spermicide, and that if a guy smoked pot, it meant he was sterile. The funny thing about the last one is we learned it in school! They were trying to convince the boys not to smoke pot. If that's not proof that people who teach need to spend a little more time actually thinking about how their students might perceive things, I don't know what is.
How did kids get so dumb? Well, my last example is a good indicator. Disinformation and miseducation is how they get so dumb. Conservatives have infiltrated our schools and turned them into propaganda camps to spread disinformation that supports their political futures. You know, like abstinence-only education? And then they have the nerve to squall that their childrens isn't larnin'.
