It figured me out

Kaylee
You are Kaylee, the ship's mechanic. You are cute
as a button, chipper, cheerfull and optimistic,
though you panic in a fight. Engines make you
hot and you prefer having sex next to a big,
humming thing.

Which Firefly character are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

Figures. My non-blog self is far too sunny for my own good. Plus, I have a Texas accent.

I take it I'm not the only person who misses this show. It was like a weekly date for me and my boyfriend before it was cancelled. First, "Firefly". Then we'd get ready to go out.

Greatest science fiction TV show EVER.

Oh, and I got Simon, the Doctor. Maybe it's from watching ER all the damned time.

It wasn't a sci-fi show, really. It was a western. Set in space.

I was Wash, by the way.

Linnaeus, fortunately, you can rent the series on DVD, including the episodes that never got broadcast. And you can watch them in order -- they were broadcast out of order, which made things confusing.

Yes, it's a western-in-space. Pretty blatantly, really. However, a lot of science fiction is some variant of the "Age of Sail" in space or the like. Science fiction isn't really about the future. Joss Whedon said he chose the structure and setting he did so he could concentrate on storytelling.

Linnaeus, by the way, Babylon 5 was my second favorite science fiction TV series of all time. Though from what others have said, that may be because I never really got to watch Farscape.

Sally, I agree and disagree. There's a lot of recontextualizing in science fiction -- some of it pretty nauseating. I've lost track of how much science fiction and fantasy I've read that features people who live in the desert and are highly militaristic religious fanatics. I gave up on Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine when one issue had two short stories with that as an element.

And a lot of science fiction -- perhaps most of it -- has overtly rightwing politics. If you've never read any of the Honor Harrington novels... don't. They're thinly veiled repackages of Horatio Hornblower in space, only with a bizarre libertarian aristocracy presented as the ideal political model. (I'm surprised how popular aristocracy is with libertarians. I can't fathom the logic.) She's constantly fighting against an evil welfare state, which is forced to expand through conquest, because *obviously* in a welfare state very few people ever actually work.

Anyway, I'm not certain of Joss Whedon's politics, but I'd be really surprised if he doesn't consider himself left-of-center. There are some parallels between the defeated Confederacy in the "Old West" and the defeated Independents in Firefly -- but not the politics. It's the slave-owning plantation-owning aristocrats who won this war. And how often do you really get a good story, especially in science fiction, from the point of view of the good guys WHO LOST?

You can't always count on winning all the time, and you need to know what to do when you lose but survive.

I really don't think the Reavers are supposed to be analogues of American Indians. They're the Other, but they're the Other who used to be Us. Think of Mal Reynold's position: he was a (minor) leader in a rebellion, who had honor and respect, but now he's an outcast, desperately trying to maintain some sense that he's different from the thieves and pirates with whom he deals. The Reavers are an image of the ultimate degradation -- they are what Mal is afraid he and his friends could become. That only works because the Reavers aren't foreign, but rather people like Mal and the others who looked too deep into the Void and lost themselves.

Whedon's politics are definitely to the left, and he is particularly interested in incorporating his feminist politics into his work. You can quibble with the results, but that's definitely his intention.

Sally, you make very good points, but I see the Western tropes on the show much differently. Much of science fiction is thinly veiled Western plots stuffed full of right wing reactionary nonsense. I think Whedon's idea was to whip the veil away, show the Western trappings of science fiction and then mount a criticism of them. Westerns glorify the power of the rugged individual, which is who the character Mal was supposed to represent.

Buffy was also a rugged individual stock character--the superhero. But the show gracefully undermined the notion that rugged individualism is an effective strategy and replaced it slowly with strategies of power-sharing and collectivism. By the end, they had set it up so that rugged individualism was trounced completely and the Slayer's power was spread all over the world. And it was demonstrated really well that sharing power is actually empowering--now that there are many Slayers, Buffy can take a break to be herself.

I have a feeling that was the direction the "Firefly" was taking. There were plot dominoes all over the place that were set up to topple and slowly discredit the legitimacy of the rugged individualism that Mal represents. The collective nature of the group on the ship was a good indicator of this.

Suspicion and opposition to government is not unique to the strand of contemporary conservatism called "libertarianism." Liberals and conservatives each tend to favor certain parts of governments, and dislike other parts. How many Robert Redford movies have there been in which the CIA came out a monstrosity? Among the radical left, there's a lot of different positions on what to do with the state: take it over, abolish it immediately, or replace it with a different one.

Otherwise, Sally made some good points.

I really like Amanda's idea, though. It very much fits my sense of the story arc. Mal seems very much stuck in a particular mental framework -- one that no longer works, one that he KNOWS no longer works, but he won't really move on. It'd make sense that, in the context of the story, he's oversimplifying the Alliance/Independents conflict. Inara said she'd favored unification, Simon did (at least he used to), and Book seems to be an Alliance agent of some kind. I have the feeling we were eventually going to run into more complications because of all that.
