Matt Yglesias gets some points back
Okay, he gets back some of the points he lost after somewhat unintentionally handing the sexists a survey to "prove" that women are dumb. He links to a blog that points out that in all the hysteria over all this sex kids are supposedly having, the biggest problem is that somehow kids are still under the impression that sex is something girls do to service boys.
This shouldn't surprise anyone. Since most discussion about teenagers and sex in this country is just hysteria about whether or not the darling blue-eyed daughters are turning into big sluts, the double standard is getting reinforced on a daily basis. Apparently, it's not for the best to teach girls that sex is something valuable they have to "give" boys, even if your intention is to teach them to hold it for somebody really special that they want to marry. If you'll remember being 15, 25 seemed so very, very far away. And girls want boys to like them now. How better than to "give" them this valuable thing?
When you teach a girl that her virginity is of paramount importance, the lesson learned is that she is just a sexual receptacle and valued only insofar as she can be used. We could try teaching girls that their sexuality belongs to them, not to some "special" future boy. Give them some self-respect. Teach them to value *gasp* their own pleasure. If girls can see themselves as sexual subjects instead of just objects to be judged by the opposite sex, they'll be better at figuring out how sex figures into their own lives.
