Women are getting pushed out of the workforce

Women are losing jobs alongside men in this recession. This is extremely worrisome, since it means that men around the country are giving up hope and not holding out for higher-paying work in traditionally male work and instead are applying for jobs in lower-paying pink collar work. And though there's no way to officially measure it, my guess is that men are still being favored over women in hiring, no matter what they do. People may not mean to discriminate in their hiring practices, but men tend to be perceived as more competent than women. I saw it many a time working in banking, where male tellers were repeatedly given promotions and raises over female tellers who had better transaction counts and stop-loss records.
The "common sense" conservative thought says women that men get money from work and women get money from men. Therefore, it's assumed that the best way to combat female poverty is to get men into jobs and improve women's "moral" character so that they can snag men with jobs to take care of them. In reality, the best way to attack the cycle of poverty for everyone, men and women, is to empower women politically and economically. And women will never be empowered as long as they are disfavored for jobs and economically dependent on men.
