Anti-abortion government misleading women.....again
According to the NY Times, the third death caused by RU-486 since it was approved in 2000 has forced the poor, beleagured FDA to make the warning label on the drug even scarier. (Soon, it will have to say, "If you kill your baby, God will strike you dead.")
Opponents of abortion say the latest death demonstrates that mifepristone is unsafe and should be withdrawn from the market. Abortion rights advocates, on the other hand, say that it has been used by nearly 360,000 women in the United States and that bad outcomes with it are exceptionally rare.
Yeah right, like they would accept the drug even if it was the safest drug ever made. I'm sure one could compile all sorts of numbers showing death rates from this or that in the country, but I think that one statistic in particular is worth looking at.
You read that correctly--404 women died in childbirth in 2000, according to the CDC. That was out of 4.06 million births that year. Time to bust out the calculator. I'm not good at math, so if my numbers are wrong, someone please, please correct me.
Chance of dying in childbirth in the year 2000: 1 in 10,049
Chance of dying from taking RU-486 in years 2000-2004: 1 in 120,000
The anti-abortion side needs to find a different tactic than telling women that abortion is dangerous, because the only other option is more so.
Not that your chance of death should inform your decision either way, unless of course you have a medical condition that your doctor feels is dangerous, but that is your private decision. I'm certainly not advocating RU-486 as a safety measure. I'm just saying that the pro-"lifers" are lying to women, telling them that the least dangerous choice is the most dangerous choice.
