The elusive male contraceptive

Well, it's time again for more promises that a shot that stops men temporarily from making sperm is just around the corner. There are people I know who are likely to avail themselves of this, or so they say. Mostly I'm thinking of single men who are terrified of getting a girl pregnant and want back-up for condoms or couples for whom the birth control pill just isn't working. Of course, that's just what they say. Until the damn shot comes out, there's no way to know how many men will actually bother to use it.

The common wisdom has been that men don't care about contraception and won't use it. Evidence for this is that tubal litigation is a more popular form of birth control than vasectomy, though I understand that this is slowly changing. I don't think that it's mere unwillingness on men's parts, actually. I think that our society is undergoing a bona fide paradigm shift. Men didn't use to bother with contraception, because it was conceptualized as a Woman's Thing. But in the age of AIDS, condom use has skyrocketed and men have grown accustomed to the idea of taking on sexual responsibility. For some segments of society now, the idea of a woman getting a tubal litigation when her man could get a vasectomy, which is a far less invasive procedure, is purely ridiculous. This is the audience for these shots.

Or maybe I'm crazy to think that people would be enthusiastic. I know I've talked about this before, but the subject interests me. Any comments about whether y'all think that men would use these shots and women would trust them to do so?
