Oops, you left some egg in your hair
It's just not as fun making fun of the conservative women calendar unless you do so from an explicitly feminist angle. So today Salon bit the bullet and did just that, putting one of their snappier writers, Rebecca Traister, to the task of making fun of this calendar. Even though it's only two pages long (some people I can think of could snark on it for a dozen and still be hilarious), she still pops off a handful of funny jokes.
Of course, there's not a small hint that Salon is wiping egg of its face, picking on Christina Hoff Sommers for this quote:
"It is unfashionable to say so but I will say it anyway: The energy, adventurousness, stoicism, and competitiveness of normal, decent males is responsible for much of what is right in the world."
If you're bedding down a feminist-hating Bush voter, that's the sort of talk that works way better than a combo of Oxycontin and Viagra, ladies, so take note. Sommers popped that one out over drinks with George Will and Rush Limbaugh and when they pointed out that she dropped the words "white" and "straight" from their proper place modifying the word "male", she gasped and said that she couldn't put that quote in, because Salon will never call her back to bash other women again.
Of course, this Phyllis Schflay moment probably won't prevent Salon from embarrassing themselves again by bringing Sommers back to pen articles that are all variations on the idea that women shouldn't move forward until every single man on the planet is as wealthy and successful as he could have hoped to be, but that's not going to stop me from enjoying this moment.
And thank god they didn't get Charles Taylor to write about this calendar and how much better it would be if they just showed some skin.
