I you don't think women are funny, it's probably because you're the butt of the joke

Sorry, Matt. But it's true. It's sad watching not really funny writers grasp at straws, trying to assert that the secret to the funny is in the penis. (Well, you could make a case for it, but probably not a case that many men would find properly flattering.) It's interesting me that the argument that we can tell women are less talented because there are less women at the top, something that usually offends liberal men who think of themselves as feminist, becomes suddenly acceptable when it's a way of implying that every man has got a leg up on the broads. And that's why your girlfriend laughs at all your jokes, even the ones that don't make her eyes crinkle up like as if she were really laughing. As much as it pains me to tell you, but comedy, like all other prestigious careers, is dominated by men because it's an old-fashioned boys' club.

(I just watched a disc of season 4 of "Mr. Show" and they had a hilarious sketch about an actual boys' club that admitted girls but wouldn't let them participate in activities. It's hard to explain, but it's funny. Even though the skit was written by men.)

Women have more obstacles getting into comedy than men, and the biggest obstacle is men like Matt who think women aren't funny. Vicious cycle and all that. If in their personal lives, these men think women aren't as funny, well, I hate to say it, but it's time for a personal inventory, guys.

If you are going to argue that women aren't funny because you don't know that many funny women, make sure that you aren't the guy who tenses up when he hears women laughing at a joke he didn't hear because he just knows they are laughing at him. And make sure you're the guy who actually listens to women when they make jokes. Oh yeah, and don't forget that just because the guys get more laughs than the gals, this is usually because the gals are remembering their training and laughing in girlish appreciation at everything the guys say, whether they think it's funny or not. And of course, don't eliminate jokes because they are about things that women know more about than men. Just because only women laugh at the joke doesn't mean it's not funny, you know.

After all that, it will still seem that women are less funny than men, because women usually talk less than men. In between squeals and giggles of appreciation at the extraordinary wit that emanates out of every penis on the planet, we women often don't have much time to make up our own jokes.
