Next on your cable morning news program....

Talking head #1: My, that Hurricane Ivan is something else.

Talking head #2: Yeah! I sure wouldn't want my house knocked down by a hurricane.

Talking head #3: And I imagine that the traffic jams to get out of the city are very frustrating.

Talking head #1: The South has been evacuated and there's not much else that can be done.

Talking head #3: Isn't there an election going on, by the way? Wouldn't this be a good time to do something like lay out the different candidates' platforms so voters can make an informed decision?

Tallking head #2: No way! If we did that, then people might know that George W. Bush's platform contrasts wildly with their own political beliefs. He could lose! That wouldn't be fair if he lost.

Talking head #3: My bad. Goodness, the waves from Hurricane Ivan are high.

On the other hand, many folks have friends or relatives in the path of Ivan.

Most of us, however, don't, and are tired of having to read through a paragraph of hurricane news in order to find out what the temperature will be in Minneapolis, MN tomorrow. And what's the point of saying, "Yep, Hurricane Ivan is coming...here it comes...still coming..."? How does that help anyone?

It's like when the local news forgoes actual news to report on car accidents and drug busts and murders. It's terrible, but to eliminate a thorough discussion of politics in order to show a bunch of pictures of a mangled vehicle is irresponsible and harmful to our so-called democracy.

As someone who's near-in-laws get to go through regular evacuations, I will say it's nice to have updates on how fast the storm is approaching. Nonetheless, constant, non-stop coverage (the winds are blowing! the rain is falling!) that goes nowhere and tells you nothing is suspicious, to say the least.
