More on the youth vote

There are lots of organizations that are dedicated to getting out the youth vote this election, and as I've said before, the best ones are dedicated to getting it out for Kerry and other liberal candidates. My favorite is Punk Voter, and if you're not checking in on the regularly, you should. They are highly attuned to what issues will bring kids to the polls in droves, and really the people who run the site should all get 2nd jobs as political consultants to the Democrats.

This insight on rising education costs is incredibly valuable, for instance:

THE EDUCATION DRAFT! It is simple economics- Kids will have to face other options if they can not afford the rising cost of education. News stories are already starting to talk about students pursuing other options than 4 year universities.

I have always maintained that the "education" President resents education and sees no reason to actually help improve it for the little people. Ancedotal evidence suggests that in his college years he resented the smarty-pants types who actually earned a spot at Yale. More importantly, less education means less informed voters and reduced voter turnout. And it means that people won't have tools to climb out of a lower social class, which can only help further the conservative goal of solidifying the social classes. But this is the first time it occured to me that it's also a good way to build up the military numbers. More poor kids without options=more cannon fodder=more military adventures for the neocons!

Anyway, the blog is insightful and the guest columns are a lot of fun. I know a lot of people who vote haphazardly, if at all, and this is the sort of thing that can interest them. I just hope that they can keep it going after the election, because even if Bush loses, his people will just regroup and try again. We need to be ever-vigilant.
