Women oppressing women

I like DED Space's take on the new version of The Stepford Wives, which I haven't yet seen. And I probably won't, as my Netflix queue is long and hairy enough. I have heard about the twist at the end where Glenn Close is a Phyllis Schflay-like creature who wants to exchange subservience for love. DED points out that this is an uncomfortably common problem.

I say, well yes and no. It's always upsetting to see how many female commentators can be dredged up and handed lucrative careers writing and touring the country telling other women to get the hell back in the kitchen. It's even sadder to see how many women buy the whole line of horseshit without even getting cut a check by their evil overlords who are using them like puppets. But I don't think that these women buy into anti-feminism so much because they see subservience as the payoff for approval. Nah, they see it as winning a catfight is the way to gain male approval.

Susan Faludi nailed it on the head in Backlash in the chapters where she interviewed anti-feminist women. Most of them all but laid back purring while they were stroked for winning against those meanie feminists. And most of them assumed a sort of "honorary man" status for being the bestest of all the girls. Being second class isn't so bad, you see, as long as you are the best person in the second class. You can see excellent examples of both attitudes among the anti-feminist women over at Hugo's blog.

Of course, anti-feminist men love to have it decked out between women because they can stand back, clucking at the silly girls and their silly fights over silly issues like feminism. Their only duty is to step in and praise the good girls who hate feminism, another darling behavior that you can see in full force in Hugo's comments.

I think that is probably why a lot of people don't buy the entire premise of the remake of The Stepford Wives, though that's just a guess since I haven't yet seen it. If all the men are robots, who then are are anti-feminist women trying to impress?
