Catholics against Kerry

Between the fact that I just got a huge uptick in comments on abortion from a Catholic blog with Republican leanings and the fact that the Vatican is allowing itself to be pressured into influencing our elections by this administration, I thought I would open a big ol' can of worms for an atheist like myself and blog really quickly about a couple concerns on Catholics and our political system. As I've said before, I grew up in a heavily Catholic area and was educated in a Catholic university. The Democrats have held onto the Catholic vote for a long time, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that for a couple of reasons the Republicans are making huge inroads in pulling Catholic votes to their side. And of course they're doing it by using methods garnered from the Protestant pro-life groups of making shared religious appeals. That, and as a feminist I must point out, by highlighting their willingness to enact anti-female legislation that fits in with Catholic Church's long tradition of keeping women out of authority.

I think it's only fair to point out to Catholics that are attracted to the Republican party that they are not your friends. They are using you to gain political power that they'll turn on Catholics the first chance they get. That should have been apparent when the Shrub jumped the gun a little and actually tried to tell the Pope what his own Church should be doing. That's the sort of presumption that power-hungry medieval kings wouldn't have. It's time to pull it together and remember that the base of the Republican party is a bunch of WASPs who think Catholicism is in poor taste and fundie Christians who think that Catholics are all going to hell for "worshipping" Mary.

It's not that there isn't a need sometimes to make alliances with those that we may have huge differences with to get things done. It's just that it should give you pause when those you are making alliances with have traditionally felt you and your ilk are beneath them. When considering the massive amounts of work being put into trying to get Catholics not to vote for a loyal Catholic like John Kerry, it would do well to remember the blatant attempts in the past to scare people out of voting for a Catholic Senator from Massachusettes for President in the past. Not that anyone is listening to me on this topic, but it would just be wise when deciding who to vote for to remember that blatant anti-Catholic prejudice like that isn't so very far in the past.

My Gawd, we are having this debate ad nauseum on my comments for weeks, then when the page disappears, it starts under a new article. LOL.

Honestly, in my humble opinion. Most Catholics are not that stupid. But I like your take on it and I just may swipe it, Miss Amanda.

Yeah--don't they remember a time when Catholic politicians were looked on as untrustworthy, because their first loyalty had to be to Rome? Why do these conservative Catholics insist on making that suspicion come true?

Many Catholics are becoming social climbers, and often social leaders, and identify with the previously WASPy nature of the old Republican leadership, as exemplified by the Bush clan. Furthermore, businessmen such as Monaghan of pizza fame are protecting their money as much as protecting zygotes. And the Catholic and feminist/lgbt constituencies of the Democratic party are in direct opposition, so the Republicans may be giving Catholics more strokes.

I daresay the great majority of Catholics are not fooled by the Republicans and their Bob Jones "the Pope is the anti-chirst" University friends.

Shameless plug:
Many of us proud Kerry catholics are at sites like:

Catholics for Kerry at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/catholicsforkerry/

Catholics for Kerry blog (http://catholicsforkerry.blogspot.com)

Kerry Catholics (http://www.kerrycatholics.com)

Catholics for Kerry 04 at http://www.catholicsforkerry04.org

Catholics for Kerry.net at http://www.catholicsforkerry.net

Just to name a few.

You are right, the Republican machine is simply using Catholics for political advantage and could care less about their values. Although in a very significant move, a couple of days ago, the Pope reject a military response as the way to address terrorism. He said that we should rather work on reversing conditions that give rise to dissaffection and consequently terrorism.

The way I see it, this Pope is as politically savvy as anyone out there. For him to contradict to recent statements by important cardinals, to make this statement shortly after it was being reported that Ratzinger and Burke had backed down from their comments about Catholics not voting for Kerry, to make a statement like this just weeks before the election is a clear rejection of this administration's core security and "diplomatic" policies. The Pope is no fool and I don't think he wants to see Bush in office for another 4 more years. The world could not take it.

Oh, agreed across the board. I guess I didn't make it clear--I think Kerry still has most of the Catholic vote in the bag, probably more than a lot of Dems because a lot of American Catholics can relate to him on a personal level, what with his having faith in the Church while not toeing the line necessarily, as most Catholics live.
Many Protestants are still under the impression that Catholics obey the Vatican, Linnet--that's probably why the Bush campaign misfired by trying to paint Kerry as a hypocrite because he doesn't live strictly by the Vatican's rules. Most Catholics that I know shrugged and said, "Who does?"
