Well, I see the Southern strategy is in full effect

That was the biggest thing I got from that debate--Bush is going to pander to the racists and Kerry isn't. Pretty much everything Bush said even touching the issue pandered to some ugly racist sentiments. His answer on the immigration question was completely incoherent and you could just see the gears clicking--how to get the Mexican-haters and the Hispanic vote in one fell swoop?

Questions about affirmative action got the same incoherent reply. Kerry was firm--this country is still racist, there is work to be done. Bush said that we just need to educate people, a blatant insult to everyone who's not white. The implication is clear--if you don't get into college, it's 'cause you're ignorant, says the C student who got into Yale even though he can't speak in complete sentences.

The discussion around education in general was just grossly insulting. Anyone who knows what's going on knows that poor schools aren't helping kids and NCLB isn't making it better. Bush all but came out and said that all the schools are the same and if kids from certain neighborhoods aren't doing better, it's because they aren't good enough. The comment, repeated twice, about kids whose parents don't speak English as a first language made me fall out of my chair. Yes, we were graduating those students before (passing them through, in Bushspeak). Children of immigrants, in case this wasn't obvious, learn English pretty much immediately. He brought it up twice, though--I dare say that this is some coded way to tell racists that he'll do what it takes to make sure their kids don't hear a word of conversational Spanish growing up.

The racist pandering isn't going to score him any points, though, but I guess he didn't have much choice. Kerry came out swinging on women's issues, a smart choice because it derailed the weak effort that Bush made with the touching story of one woman who voted in Afghanistan for the cameras without explaining how most are scared to get near the polls. Kerry quickly destroyed Bush's pathetic efforts to make it sound like he gives a shit about ordinary people--Kerry made it clear that he had plans, and Bush had sentimental wanderings.

The last question was stupid, but since that sort of emotional stuff sticks with people, it's worth considering. Not now, though. I have to think about that one. The closing statements were great, though. Kerry made a great speech and Bush didn't drool. Kerry should have the election wrapped up, and if he doesn't, I'm definitely suspecting fraud.

To be fair, two things:

1) Kerry made a point of the sad fact that women make less than men on average, specifically releating wages to Womens' rights.

2) Women do, by and large, make up a greater percentage of minimum wage earners than do men. This isn't right, and in fact it's completely f***ed up, but it's the facts, and it does a lot to explain why Kerry specifically singled out women as his preferred example of those who would be helped by his plan.

Also, let's be honest, the idea that Kerry could ever trail Bush in the women's vote would be Laughable, if it weren't for the fact that several (flawed) polls indicate precisely that. I think it was smart of Kerry, and also, he was so on point elsewise that I'm inclined to forgive him for his occasioanl gaffes.

Plus, Game Faces everyone! Don't criticize when you can take down Bush! Kerry kicked Bush's oligarchic little ass, period. We can parse after we win the election.

I respectfully disagree, Amanda. I sincerely believe that the single best way to get to a point where we no longer need anything named "affirmative action" is to get there through education. I don't mean affirmative action plans for college, either. I mean starting in kindergarten. As someone who has gone to schools that were both predominantly white and predominantly non-white, let me tell you there is a humongous difference. From what I hear from a hardcore liberal friend who runs a Citizens Schools program in Boston, No Child Left Behind is working-- it could work better, but it is working. I'm afraid I don't see the racism there.

As for immigration, I didn't see much difference between Kerry and Bush. Both agreed that the borders were porous, that we needed to curtail illegal immigration across the border, that that illegal immigration represented a security threat, and that we needed to keep employers from hiring illegal aliens. Kerry suggested enforcing the law better, and Bush supported a temporary worker card. Kerry agreed that we needed a temporary worker plan and argued that illegal aliens should be able to have an earned residency plan. Bush suggested that they go through the naturalization plan already in place. I don't really see a real difference (other than on getting citizenship) between the candidates on that issue.

I will grant, you, though, what you said before regarding Dred Scott. I think you were right.

Earnest seems to be implying that we have AA because minorities aren't educated enough. Kerry kicked the whiners in their relevent bits by noting that white women benefit from AA. We have AA because whites are racist, (and men are sexist) not because of substandard schools. It's social justice legislation. Even if all black people went to the best schools in the country, that would not change attitudes- because the attitudes have nothing to do with actual blacks.

The fact that so many people think that AA is because blacks are stupid really says a lot more about them, than it says about us.

As one of the aforementioned minorities, I feel I have the liberty to speak on what I've seen in my community. I understand why we have to have affirmative action, but I also see an exit strategy, and that exit strategy is education, plain and simple. No amount of set-asides or scholarships will have the same equalizing effect as a great primary education. I think that through hard work we could eliminate the need for affirmative action in a generation.

Earnest, you miss the point completely. The reason we have affrimative action is to level the playing field- i.e. to control the effects of racism(and sexism). Many whites go to crappy schools, and can't do their jobs worth a crap, but they don't need affrimative action, because they get a pass- no matter how unqualfied they are for the positions they occupy.

Education of blacks won't solve racism- because it is a white problem. It has nothing to do with our actual acheivement. It is irrational. Now, you can blame blacks for white's behavior. But that is ridiculous. They are responsible for their own racism.

We have affirmative action because there were laws social norms that kept us from being able to achieve what white Americans could. When those laws were removed, minorities found themselves at a disadvantage from centuries of unfair play. Affirmative action seeks to offset that headstart that white males enjoy. There is nothing that you could do that would have a greater effect than launching an all-out educational assault in poor communities. I say poor because that includes whites but also includes minorites in staggering percentages. What good are jobs if people, lacking degrees, aren't educated enough to get them? What good are collegiate affirmative action programs if students aren't graduating high school? If you want to have an affirmative action program that helps all disadvantaged students, it simply must be an educational program that begins in primary school. You must be dedicated to making sure that the education disadvantaged people are receiving is just as good as all the others. And you can't just ask the child to take an education, you have to give it to him. You have to be able to measure his progress against his own past achievements and against his peers' achievement. You have to be certain that when he graduates, he has all the tools he needs to go on to college if he chooses or do meaningful work elsewhere. When you know that no matter who you look at, regardless of race or gender, they have the exact same base of knowledge, you will know that affirmative action will have worked.

We have a fundemental difference of opinion. I do not think blacks are inferior to whites or that we have not achieved anything as good as white people have. Yes, they killed more people and got more ill gotten wealth, but we have done well for the constraints we have been under. Education is well and good, but it can not remove those constraints. I dislike it when a person hates their own people.

The NCLB act has led to black kids being pushed out of schools. Teaching to the test doesn't work. We need actual effective approaches to education. And how are you going to keep black kids in school when you say that they are inferior, and you hate your own self and think your own race is inferior? Your attitudes transmit to kids- they see what you do. We tried education without social justice before. Look to history, educate yourself. It didn't work as well as we might have hoped.

We do not need to coddle white people's racism, we need to confront it. They can handle it. They are adults like us.

I think you severely misunderstand me, Shannon. I don't hate my race. In fact, if I sound harsh, it's because I know that we can do much better than we have. If I sound disappointed, it's because when I attended Morgan State University's graduation this past May, I was startled by the paltry number of men graduating. If I sound regretful, it's because of the uproar over Bill Cosby's insisting parents needed to be more presesnt in their children's educational lives. I have never said blacks are inferior to whites; I have implied that they are just as capable as whites and should have an education that allows them to maximize their potential. Part of that is ensuring that by the time these students get to high school, they've received an education that makes their dropping out less likely. It will be difficult at first-- change always is difficult-- but will pay off in the long run.

Just got back from getting this new computer. It sure has been a long time since I've been on a keyboard. I guess this typing thing is just like learning how to ride a bicyle. Shoot, if I can do that, learn more about Hosting your own domain and go out and get my own computer, I know I can do it. Just needs a little practice I guess. I heard that if you start engaging in Instat Messaging conversations, that helps to build up some speed. I dunno... oh well, later.
