Girl power warriors are not a new thing

Buffy, eat your heart out.

DNA tests on the 2,000-year-old bones of a sword-wielding Iranian warrior have revealed the broad-framed skeleton belonged to woman, an archaeologist working in the northwestern city of Tabriz said on Saturday.

"Despite earlier comments that the warrior was a man because of the metal sword, DNA tests showed the skeleton inside the tomb belonged to a female warrior," Alireza Hojabri-Nobari told the Hambastegi newspaper.

There's a branch of evolutionary psychology that exists only to put forward tired gender stereotypes with absolutely no evidence to substantiate the theories. This is the sort of thing that should humble those who think that women somehow evolved weakness and that the notion that women can be strong and fierce is a modern delusion brought on by feminism. But evidence that Amazonian warriors were all over the place in ancient times never seems to make a dent in the firmly held belief that a woman's rightful place is cowering behind a big, strong man with a baby in her arms.

Your post reminded me of a couple of PBS Nova shows about the Amazonian legend. The first aired some time in 1999 or 98, and was the unearthing of an ice bound tomb of a warrior woman on the Russian steppes. The archeologists found evidence of embalming, and many tatoos on the flesh that had remained intact. The second, which aired in August of 2004, followed up with more finds of "warrior women" and a mitochondrial DNA comparison between genetic material found in the tombs, and a blonde mongolian girl living today in a nomadic tribe in the region. Fascinating stuff. Here is a link for more info on the nova episode.

I suspect that these warrior women did not conform to the "historically traditional marriage" that fundies so want us all to believe.
