What do Social Security and winning WWII have in common?

Yep, they were both done under the leadership of FDR. That's the thing that gets me about the recent Bush win; it was accomplished in part by scaring the crap out of swing voters and offering them a choice: Do you want economic recovery or your life? You can't have both, you know. Sure, pick the Democrats and economic recovery. That will be all fun and games until the TERRORISTS kill you and your children. Because if someone is busy with an economic recovery and a social safety net, he is incapable of accomplishing a military victory.

Well, the Republicans won and they are busy both losing the wars they started and dismantling Social Security, on the theory that a fund that big is put to better use buying Ferraris for investment bankers rather than food for old people. They managed to run a campaign by saying we're at war and only Republicans have the capability of winning wars, an assertion with zero proof behind it.

I was listening to Air America radio this morning and they were fretting over how the Republicans are pissing all over FDR's social welfare programs. I thought, "Well hell they are also pissing all over his military victories, drawing comparisons between their nimrod of a leader and the leadership that won WWII, though they are careful to imply that Winston Churchill was our President at the time."

Dammit, would it have been so wrong to blanket swing states with ads reminding people that it was the Democrats who beat back fascism and thereby are the party of choice to beat back terrorism? Facts is facts, and yeah, the cadre of talk show fascist wannabes would have complained about it non-stop, but I'll bet it would have done a lot to tone down the numbers of people who voted because they are afraid of terrorism and think Bush is gonna save them.

Not to mention the fact that the Iranian ayatollahs wanted Bush to win--because Republicans are soft on human-rights-abusing dictators. (They feel a sense of kinship, perhaps?)

You could have reminded people that Dems were the militarily tough party once upon a time, but that would only have worked to point out the deficit in that "toughness" that exists now. The military hawks in the Democratic party jumped ship in the seventies and became the neocons of today. Simply, it would have been a bigger mistake than having Kerry "report for duty".

God damn it but I'd love to see what Churchill would have to say about your current leadership. I really don't think they'd be happy with what he had to say.

Am I reading you correctly? This line of yours sounds like the argument the pro-war left has put forward many times. Read the good folks over at Harry's Place for an example. Personally, I'm on the left and I supported the war because I accepted Tony Blair's comparison of the current situation with the 1930s. When FDR was our president, we faced down facism. The pro-war Left argues that we, once again, face a fascist threat that must be faced down with military action. However, the 1930s represent a failure of will on the part of the democracies. We could have easily intervened in Spain to save Spanish democracy, at a time when Hitler was still weak, but instead the democracies stood by, impotent, while Spain was taken over by Franco. You can read Hemingway's novel "For Whom The Bell Tolls" or, even more so, Orwell's novel "A Homage to Catalonia" to get a sense of how things went in Spain.

I'm left wondering if you really want to make a comparison between the current situation and the FDR era? If you are, then I've trouble understanding why you wouldn't support agressive military action in the MidEast. Winston Churchill was once asked by a journalist what name should be given to (what later came to be known as) WWII. He immediately responed "The Unnecessary War". His point was that during the 1930s the democracies had stood by and done nothing while Hitler had slowly amassed power, and any point before September 1 of 1939 would have been a better point to intervene and stop Hitler's rise. It is hard to study the 1930s and not conclude that aggressive military action early on would have saved the world much suffering later. Germany was completly disarmed in 1933, when Hitler was elected.

You ask why the Democrats didn't blanket swing states with ads reminding people who beat the fascists the last time. I suspect the answer is that the Democratic base would have screamed in protest. The war is one of those issues where I've found myself in disagreement with my close friends - people I usually agree with. Most of my friends are on the Left. I can tell you that they resist any comparisson between the terrorists we now fight and the fascists of the 1930s. Rather, they see it the other way around - Israel and America are the real terrorists, they say. Some of the people I know on the far, far Left insist that the Islamic terrorists are really freedom fighters, fighting against American imperialism.

I think you make a good point about the Democrats having a history of both winning wars and building the economy. I voted for Kerry because I thought he would bring about an economic recovery and also do a good job at fighting fascism. I think the fight against fascism is in part of war of ideas, and it therefore truly liberal people have the advantage over conservatives, as conservatives, especially religious conservatives, come dangerously close to agreeing with our enemy on too many issues (the status of women, for one). For that reason, I wish Kerry had been more passionate in defending the liberal ideals of America, as they are the great proof of our consistency in the fight against facism. But sadly, Kerry did not do that, and the Democrats do not do that, and part of the reason is, tragically, many on the Left refuse to see the war in those terms. They do not see it as a struggle of liberalism against religious extremism and Islamo-facism. Instead, they see it as a justified rebellion in the provinces against American imperialism.

I guess I was hoping this electoral defeat would force Democrats to take a hard look at the illiberal elements in the Democratic coalition and think about shaking up the current set of alliances. But now I think this will not happen. I see a lot of left-of-center blogs settling into a pattern of bashing the most extreme elements in the Republican party. For instance, I see a lot of bashing of the Christian fundamentalists. That is a lot of fun, of course, and worth some laughs, but it is also quite easy and it doesn't invent a winning progressive coalition. The fundamentalists make up maybe 20% of the population and will never come close to making a majority. Much harder than attacking the fundamentalists is attacking the most liberal elements in the Republican party (the free-marketeers, the Wilsonian interventionists) and offering a critique of their policies.

Microsoft lawsuit is called a 'charade'

In a simmering legal tussle, Google, the Internet search company, is asking a judge to reject Microsoft's bid to keep a prized research engineer from taking a job at Google, saying that Microsoft filed a lawsuit to frighten other workers from defecting.

Microsoft sued the research engineer, Kai-Fu Lee, and Google last week, asserting that by taking the Google job, Lee was violating an agreement that he signed in 2000 barring him from working for a direct competitor in an area that overlapped with his role at Microsoft.

"This lawsuit is a charade," Google said in court documents filed before a hearing on Wednesday in Seattle. "Indeed, Microsoft executives admitted to Lee that their real intent was to scare other Microsoft employees into remaining at the company."

Google countersued last week, seeking to override Microsoft's noncompete provision so that it can retain Lee.

"In truth, Kai-Fu Lee's work for Microsoft had only the most tangential connection to search and no connection whatsoever to Google's work in this space," Google said in court documents.

The judge in the case, Steven Gonzalez of Superior Court, who heard arguments in the case on Wednesday, said he expected to issue a ruling on Thursday.

Google's filings include details about a conversation Lee had with Microsoft's chairman, Bill Gates, suggesting that his company was becoming increasingly concerned about Google's siphoning of talent, and perhaps intellectual property.

Lee said Gates told him in a meeting on July 15, referring to Microsoft's chief executive, Steven Ballmer: "Kai-Fu, Steve is definitely going to sue you and Google over this. He has been looking for something like this, someone at a VP level to go to Google. We need to do this to stop Google."

A Microsoft spokeswoman, Stacy Drake, declined to comment on Gates's statement directly.

"Our concern here is the fact that Dr. Lee has knowledge of highly sensitive information both of our search business and our strategy in China," she said.

Lee said Google did not recruit him and had not encouraged him to violate any agreement he had with Microsoft.

Microsoft countered that Lee's job with Google gave him ample opportunity to leak sensitive technical and strategic business secrets. Microsoft noted that Lee attended a confidential, executive-only briefing in March, which was labeled "The Google Challenge."

"In short, Dr. Lee was recently handed Microsoft's entire Google competition 'playbook,"' Microsoft said.

Lee joined Microsoft in August 2000 after he helped to establish its research center in China. At one point, Microsoft said, he was in charge of the company's work on MSN Search.

Microsoft and Google, along with Yahoo, are locked in a fierce battle to dominate search, both online and through desktop search programs. Google has begun offering new services, including e-mail, that compete with Microsoft offerings.

Microsoft said it had paid Lee well in exchange for his promises to honor confidentiality and noncompete agreements.

The company said that Lee made more than $3 million during nearly five years at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, and that he earned more than $1 million last year.

Microsoft asserts that there is "an extremely close between the work Lee did at Microsoft and what he will be doing at Google.

Google argued otherwise, insisting that Lee is not a search expert and noting that his most recent work at Microsoft was in speech recognition.

Help me Dude, I think I'm lost..... I was searching for Elvis and somehow ended up in your blog, but you know I'm sure I saw him in a car lot yesterday, which is really strange because the last time I saw him was in the supermarket. No honest really, he was right there in front of me, next to the steaks singing "Love me Tender". He said to me (his lip was only slightly curled) "Boy, you need to get yourself a San Diego cosmetic surgery doctor ,to fit into those blue suede shoes of yours. But Elvis said in the Ghetto nobody can afford a San Diego plastic surgery doctor. Dude I'm All Shook Up said Elvis. I think I'll have me another cheeseburger. Then I'm gonna go round and see Michael Jackson and we're gonna watch a waaaay cool make-over show featuring some Tijuana dentists on the TV in the back of my Hummer. And then he just walked out of the supermarket singing. . . "You give me love and consolation,
You give me strength to carry on " Strange day or what? :-)

Hi there ##name##,

I read your comments on the business opportunity cash honestfortunes.com. As for me and I believe many average jacks out there, keeping a day job is a necessity. However, up until 7 weeks back I could not face another day without the knowledge that I need to radically change my life inorder to stay in credit..and start dreaming about savings.

The explosive nature of the internt and its supercon artists (experienced net-marketers) is singularly responsible for the 98% failure rate of all newbie related online business failures.

In my view any one wanting to explore their luck online is doomed to failure. The problem with the newbie is not that of access to quality products. No, it is how and where to market the product that has been dumped rather cleverly by the experienced marketer in the newbies hands.

After 4 years of trying almost every strategy without success I can honestly say any one trying their luck on online opportunities needs be ware. Prospecting and marketing costs are way too high for the newbie. Often, as only I have learnt, the newbie puts money into hyped marketing systems that do not deliver the traffic that is required for making sales.

A clever solution to this newbie predicament has been solved by Bill Osterhout's Prosperity Automated System. In here there is no selling, no prospecting, no marketing. No emailling lists here, no advertisements, no phone calls, no no MLMs or chain letters. The PAS system hooks its self to search engines when people search for business opportunity cash honestfortunes.com related information. It sells itself or whatever product you happen to be promoting, closes the sale for you and you get the money. Bill has levelled the playing filled, compelled the newbie to make money or make excuses, while allowing the experienced marketer to feed the system with steroids for enhanced sales.
Everyone closes a sale here within a month or so, getting $3000 per sale. It is here: http://www.MegaWealthy.com/224

I thougth I should help some of your readers who may have given up hope...well now there is!

To your success
