A woman had sex, news at 11

Ross kicks the evil liberal media around for the way they've decided to just go ahead and portray Scott Peterson's girlfriend as a conniving, slutty, Other Woman, despite the fact that she was apparently unaware that he had a wife. Oh, and that it was a very brave thing of her to step forward once she realized what was going on and offer her private life for inspection if it led the murderer to justice.

I wasn't aware of how the coverage of this aspect of the situation was going at all. I have pretty much tuned out the whole Peterson case, except to note that Laci Peterson's life seems to be valued pretty much only for the baby she was carrying. I knew that Scott Peterson's girlfriend had stepped forward on her own, which I found to be an admirable and almost kind of crazy act of bravery, considering that if he really is the sort to just kill women who inconvienence him, as the prosecution is charging, then she might be in real danger.

It's stomach-churning to think that anyone thinks it is appropriate in this day and age to sit in judgement on a woman for having a boyfriend. Or maybe they think that she should have known what he wouldn't tell her somehow. That's a typical enough response to women who are victimized by men that they were close to, that it's somehow the victim's fault for not knowing that he was a liar/murderer/whatever.

Ross is right that the message that this woman is a Slut is getting across loud and clear. In my office today, a bunch of people were in an earnest debate over exactly how slutty she is. I said that I thought she was a victim of his lies and that I admired her for stepping forward, and you should have seen the looks I got. *sigh*
